High Hazels Academy Speech and language provision pathway

At High Hazels, many of our children will need ongoing support with language due to having English as an additional language, transient language difficulties or specific speech and language needs. We recognise this is our universal provision offer for all pupils at our school from Early Years through to Y6. We assess all pupils at FS1, FS2 and Y3 and for new starters on entry to school to ensure language needs are identified and supported swiftly.

FS1

FS1 – All children are assessed on the ESCAL speech and language screener and using the red flag indicators are flagged up in the areas of vocabulary, grammar and sentence formulation.
Children who are red/amber flag will receive Play and Say. Children who are classed as age related will receive Concept Cat. Children who require support with building attention and concentration will receive Attention Autism.

FS2

FS1-All children are reassessed on the ESCAL speech and language screener at the end of FS1 and for those scoring red/amber flags they are assessed using the LEAP screener and grouped according to their scores ready for FS2.
FS2- All new starters are assessed on the ESCAL and added to LEAP groups where needed.

Y1-Y6

All children on FS2 who were flagged as red or amber at the start of the year on the ESCAL are reassessed at the end of the year and regrouped ready for the Y1.

Children in Y1-Y6 access the speech and language pathway below

Speech and language checklists are used to support identification of language needs and support packs linked to these are used to support cildren whilst awaiting a therapy referral if a Wave 2 group is not appropriate. Implementation of Wave 1 strategies is expected for pupils at Record of Concern level.

Children who are new to school FS2 to Y6

Children who are new to school are assessed using The Communication Progression tool and Renfrew Action Picture test and ESCAL FS2/Y1. If a child is New to County they follow the New to Country procedures. The Wave 2 support merges with the speech and language pathway.
New to Country children
Children who are new to the country are assessed for language in the same way as other children who start school. Children also then receive a home language assessment where appropriate.
Children are assessed on the Sheffield EAL service – initial assessment and an All About me profile.  This is used to gather information about the child and family using pictorial prompts. A full language history is taken. Children are also assessed on the NASSEA assessment.
In class:
•    Children are supported by a buddy in class/playtimes/lunchtimes to support them to settle in.
•    Induction pack in home language
•    Home language lanyard to communicate needs
•    Home language/English vocabulary book
